One peek at GameSpot's live video reveal of the complete roster of the upcoming WWE SmackDown! vs. Raw 2010 and it's clear that THQ and developer Yuke's are cramming a bunch of substance into the game. In addition to a roster packed with WWE SuperStars and Divas as well a focus on creation tools (including the sort new story designer, which sounds like a load of fun), the game will plus have a ton of match types to compete in. Today, we've got a look at two of the match types in the game, Championship Scramble and Royal Rumble.

Championship Scramble

Mix a timer together with a fatal four-way match, and toss in a championship belt up, and you'll have an concept of how the Championship Scramble works. In that make new match type, two wrestlers start off the match and a new competitor enters at specific intervals during the timed match. Eventually, five wrestlers are in the ring at once and whether any one of them scores a pinfall, he is declared the title holder. The last man holding the title once the timer runs out leaves as the champion.

You have three match-length options in the Championship Scramble matches: five, ten, or twenty minutes and you can choose when your wrestler enters the ring or set it to random. The longer the match, the larger the interval you have until new wrestlers enter the ring so, whether your wrestler is in early, the most successful strategy seems to be to work by your opponent as quickly as possible and get a quick pinfall. From there you can do your best to stay away from the opponents until the end of the match. Once the ring fills up with more wrestlers, successful pins are hard to come by, as the AI wrestlers will inevitably break up each pin attempt. Anything goes in that match, including the use of foreign objects like chairs, sledgehammers and two-by-fours, so you'll need to be on your toes at all times.

Royal Rumble

A fan favorite in the real WWE, the Royal Rumble features a constant stream of WWE SuperStars entering the ring, each of them looking to survive and win that prestigious match. In the game, you'll be able to play three variations on the Royal Rumble: 10-man, 20-man, and 30-man, the last of which turns out to be a Herculean task of survival, particularly whether you're called into the match in the early goings.

As with the Championship Scramble matches, you'll be able to choose which SuperStars take part in the Rumble, as well as which wrestler you control. You can set your wrestler's entry round or set it to random and take your chances. Once the match begins, it's a matter of waiting until your number is called and watching the mayhem unfold in the ring. Wrestlers are eliminated from the Royal Rumble only whether they are tossed out of the ring, and it's common for alliances to be formed and broken at any moment as wrestlers gang up to get opponents out of the ring.

Once your wrestler is in the squared circle, you'll be looking to cut, slap and slam anything that gets in your way, while doing your best to avoid getting ganged up on. With lots of wrestlers in the ring at once (I counted a maximum of six in the ring during our instance with the game), your best bet for success will be to take advantage of someone else's weakness: look for Superstars that are getting ganged up on and wait for a chance to push them by the top rope. whether a wrestler is struggling to put someone by the top, you can join in on the action and help him out as well.

Unlike previous versions of the Royal Rumble, ring-outs in SVR 2010 won't just be button-mashing minigames. There are several different types of ring-outs in the game, each with a slightly different control scheme:

Middle rope elimination: The most straightforward of the bunch, that ring-out is accomplished by rapidly pressing the button shown on screen. whether you've got an AI wrestler or two helping out, the chance of eliminating your opponent increases. whether you're on a defense and have a finisher stored up, you can instantly escape middle rope elimination by pressing the right bumper (R1 on PS3).

Bottom rope elimination: When attempting an elimination here, a meter will pop up; to ring-out your opponent, you'll need to stop a cursor in the meter's blue target zone by pressing the A button (X on PS3). whether you've got a finisher on defense, you can escape by pressing the right bumper (R1).

Corner elimination: This one's all about timing. When attempting to eliminate an opponent in the corner, you'll see a button icon seem on screen; press it before your opponent and you'll gain an advantage–do it sufficient times and you'll eliminate him. Again, whether you have a finisher stored you can escape a corner elimination by pressing the right bumper (R1).

Naturally, conserving your energy in the Royal Rumble is of supreme importance. Unless you're the last one in the ring, you can inevitably count on some of the biggest WWE stars coming late in the match. In one Rumble I played–using Finlay who had entered early on in the bout–I made it all the way to the final pairing only to be eliminated by a relatively fresh Triple H. Surprises are common in the Rumble; in one case, you might think you've got a wrestler ready for elimination, only to have him flip by the top rope, land on the mat and roll back into the ring.

As elsewhere in the game, you can use created wrestlers in both Championship Scramble and in the Royal Rumble but, unless you've spent some day building up their attributes, they won't be much challenge for the heavy hitter Superstars. One of the best ways to beef up your created wrestlers is to spend some instance in SVR 2010's story mode, known as Road to WrestleMania. We'll have a look at the mode, its multiple storylines, and how you progress your created Superstars in the game, in our next look at the game on Wednesday, October 7.

A study released yesterday in the American Academy of Pediatrics journal Pediatrics notes that about 32 percent of American children are overweight due to sedentary activities, like sitting in front of a television while playing video games. However, the same report finds that games may plus be part of a solution to childhood obesity.

In the experiments, heart rates nearly doubled while boxing on the Wii, compared to resting.

Led by Diana Graf of the University of Oklahoma Health Services Center, the study claims to be the “first objective measurement” of the impact of the Wii on kids’ health. It found that children ages 10 to 13 can get more exercise out of Wii Sports’ boxing and the PlayStation 2’s Dance Dance Revolution than they can out of walking on a treadmill. Wii Sports’ bowling was additionally included in the study and offered less dramatic benefits, but it still beat sedentary gameplay. Given the results, the researchers recommend vigorous gaming as a valuable way for children to stay fit. Wii has a myriad of games to get the younglings’ heartrates up.

“Energy expenditure during active video game play is comparable to moderate-intensity walking,” the paper concludes. “Thus, for children who spend considerable moment playing electronic screen games for entertainment, physically active games seem to be a safe, fun, and valuable means of promoting energy expenditure.”

To conduct the study, researchers observed 14 boys and 9 girls ages 10 to 13 as they exercised using treadmills and game consoles. Subjects occupied a wide spectrum of body compositions, ranging from underweight to obese, and were measured based on energy expenditure, step rate, and heart rate.

A diverse range of children could be exposed to game-based exercise, with 64 percent of kids gaming on consoles and portable devices according to the NPD Group. The average age a child first uses a video game system is 6.5 years old, a group analyst told GameSpot in June.

Console games may additionally promote good behavior for children, with three recent studies concluding that children who play cooperative video games are more likely to be altruistic. However, a 2007 Iowa State University report claims violent games instill aggressive behavior.

Dead Space Extraction is a fresh take on last year’s premier sci-fi survival horror offering, as we found out in EA’s first demo.

Even though Dead Space didn’t do as well as publisher EA might have hoped, the amount of investment in comics, DVDs and merchandise meant that it was always planned as an ongoing series. In fact, so assured of the nascent franchise’s potential was developer EA Redwood Shores, that it started work on a Wii game halfway through development of the original. We got to speak to the team that broke off to work on Nintendo’s console, and manufacture out how they’re turning the survival horror hit into an on-rails shooter.

The Wii version of Dead Space looks admirably close to the Xbox 360 and PS3 originals.

The first thing to note about Extraction is just how good it looks. The game can certainly claim to be one of the best-looking Wii games to date, and perhaps even more impressively, it actually compares favourably to the Xbox 360/PlayStation 3 original. The human characters have all been face and motion captured from actors, while the necromorph enemies look and move just like they did in the original. We’re additionally promised dynamic shadows in the finished build, while the BAFTA-winning sound team has been brought by to bring the same expertise to the Wii version.

The game itself may be an on-rails shooter, but it retains the distinct Dead Space style, thanks to the puzzles, strategic dismemberment and distinct visual style that are all carried by. All of the same weapons are included, including the flamethrower, plasma cutter and disc ripper, and we’re promised more engineering tools to play with as well. The same applies for the zero-gravity sections that were so haunting in the original game, although we didn’t get to see those in action.

The level that we were shown took place aboard the USG Ishimura, the same ship from the original Dead Space. It’s chapter four, so a good way into the game, and you’ve reached the ship after escaping Aegis VII, the planet that it was supposed to be mining. We watched a developer from EA Redwood Shores play the game, and saw how the Wii remote and nunchuck were used to navigate the game. A cursor on the screen shows where you’re aiming with the Wii remote, but whether the enemies get too close, you can shake them off by waggling the remote. day it right and the regular necromorphs won’t be able to hurt you, and you can plus use your telekenesis powers to slow them down or pull other weapons towards you.

You can shake the nunchuck to snap a glowstick, allowing you to light up darkened areas..

There are lots of other motion-sensitive controls in Extraction. You can shake the nunchuck to use a glowstick–allowing you to see enemies in the game’s many pitch-black sections. There’s additionally an active reload system, and whether you day things right, you can reload faster than you would by default. We plus got to see one of the puzzles–a basic line-drawing exercise where you had to draw a path amidst two points without hitting the obstacles and causing a short circuit. It’s not particularly taxing, and in fact the puzzle was supposedly a placeholder, but it looked to be fairly tense in the demo. You plus use the Wii remote to physically open doors, which is another nice touch.

So what else is there to say about the game at that stage? There’ll be two player drop-in co-operative play, meaning someone else can grab a Wii remote and nunchuck and play as they like. There are plus branching paths through each level, meaning there’ll be some replayability to the game once you’ve completed it. The development team plus promises that the game will play heavily into the Dead Space mythology, rewarding those who’ve absorbed the games, comics and films, while it will additionally boast one big secret that promises to shock fans. We were impressed with what we saw in of the game at that early stage, so keep an eye on GameSpot for more data as we get it.
