One thing is for certain, whether the folks by at the US Air Force ever need to take a break, they won’t be short of ways to entertain themselves.

One peek at GameSpot's live video reveal of the complete roster of the upcoming WWE SmackDown! vs. Raw 2010 and it's clear that THQ and developer Yuke's are cramming a bunch of substance into the game. In addition to a roster packed with WWE SuperStars and Divas as well a focus on creation tools (including the sort new story designer, which sounds like a load of fun), the game will plus have a ton of match types to compete in. Today, we've got a look at two of the match types in the game, Championship Scramble and Royal Rumble.

Championship Scramble

Mix a timer together with a fatal four-way match, and toss in a championship belt up, and you'll have an concept of how the Championship Scramble works. In that make new match type, two wrestlers start off the match and a new competitor enters at specific intervals during the timed match. Eventually, five wrestlers are in the ring at once and whether any one of them scores a pinfall, he is declared the title holder. The last man holding the title once the timer runs out leaves as the champion.

You have three match-length options in the Championship Scramble matches: five, ten, or twenty minutes and you can choose when your wrestler enters the ring or set it to random. The longer the match, the larger the interval you have until new wrestlers enter the ring so, whether your wrestler is in early, the most successful strategy seems to be to work by your opponent as quickly as possible and get a quick pinfall. From there you can do your best to stay away from the opponents until the end of the match. Once the ring fills up with more wrestlers, successful pins are hard to come by, as the AI wrestlers will inevitably break up each pin attempt. Anything goes in that match, including the use of foreign objects like chairs, sledgehammers and two-by-fours, so you'll need to be on your toes at all times.

Royal Rumble

A fan favorite in the real WWE, the Royal Rumble features a constant stream of WWE SuperStars entering the ring, each of them looking to survive and win that prestigious match. In the game, you'll be able to play three variations on the Royal Rumble: 10-man, 20-man, and 30-man, the last of which turns out to be a Herculean task of survival, particularly whether you're called into the match in the early goings.

As with the Championship Scramble matches, you'll be able to choose which SuperStars take part in the Rumble, as well as which wrestler you control. You can set your wrestler's entry round or set it to random and take your chances. Once the match begins, it's a matter of waiting until your number is called and watching the mayhem unfold in the ring. Wrestlers are eliminated from the Royal Rumble only whether they are tossed out of the ring, and it's common for alliances to be formed and broken at any moment as wrestlers gang up to get opponents out of the ring.

Once your wrestler is in the squared circle, you'll be looking to cut, slap and slam anything that gets in your way, while doing your best to avoid getting ganged up on. With lots of wrestlers in the ring at once (I counted a maximum of six in the ring during our instance with the game), your best bet for success will be to take advantage of someone else's weakness: look for Superstars that are getting ganged up on and wait for a chance to push them by the top rope. whether a wrestler is struggling to put someone by the top, you can join in on the action and help him out as well.

Unlike previous versions of the Royal Rumble, ring-outs in SVR 2010 won't just be button-mashing minigames. There are several different types of ring-outs in the game, each with a slightly different control scheme:

Middle rope elimination: The most straightforward of the bunch, that ring-out is accomplished by rapidly pressing the button shown on screen. whether you've got an AI wrestler or two helping out, the chance of eliminating your opponent increases. whether you're on a defense and have a finisher stored up, you can instantly escape middle rope elimination by pressing the right bumper (R1 on PS3).

Bottom rope elimination: When attempting an elimination here, a meter will pop up; to ring-out your opponent, you'll need to stop a cursor in the meter's blue target zone by pressing the A button (X on PS3). whether you've got a finisher on defense, you can escape by pressing the right bumper (R1).

Corner elimination: This one's all about timing. When attempting to eliminate an opponent in the corner, you'll see a button icon seem on screen; press it before your opponent and you'll gain an advantage–do it sufficient times and you'll eliminate him. Again, whether you have a finisher stored you can escape a corner elimination by pressing the right bumper (R1).

Naturally, conserving your energy in the Royal Rumble is of supreme importance. Unless you're the last one in the ring, you can inevitably count on some of the biggest WWE stars coming late in the match. In one Rumble I played–using Finlay who had entered early on in the bout–I made it all the way to the final pairing only to be eliminated by a relatively fresh Triple H. Surprises are common in the Rumble; in one case, you might think you've got a wrestler ready for elimination, only to have him flip by the top rope, land on the mat and roll back into the ring.

As elsewhere in the game, you can use created wrestlers in both Championship Scramble and in the Royal Rumble but, unless you've spent some day building up their attributes, they won't be much challenge for the heavy hitter Superstars. One of the best ways to beef up your created wrestlers is to spend some instance in SVR 2010's story mode, known as Road to WrestleMania. We'll have a look at the mode, its multiple storylines, and how you progress your created Superstars in the game, in our next look at the game on Wednesday, October 7.

Last week, gaming fans of the 1986 film Aliens (see below) got some welcome news when Gearbox Software confirmed it is still developing Aliens: Colonial Marines. The game, which has been back-burnered so the Texas developer can focus on its original October release Borderlands, had been rumored to be canceled following the surprise announcement of Aliens vs. Predator.

(Insert ‘game over’ joke here.)

Another game that was rumored to be canceled was the unnamed Aliens role-playing game being developed by Obsidian Entertainment. Though the independent shop, formed in 2003 by former Fallout 2 developer Black Isle Studios, remained officially mum on the matter, GameSpot learned that work on the title had been indefinitely suspended in February. Though

the game’s forums remained active on the Obsidian site, subsequent reports from former staffers said the game had been canceled outright.

that afternoon, Obsidian made it official with

a brief post from an administrator on the Aliens RPG forums. “Rumors have circled around a bit regarding the fate of the Aliens role playing game that Obsidian and Sega had been working on,” read the post. “Unfortunately, it is true that we are no longer working on the game, and we wanted to finally announce that officially to everyone who has been following its development.” The Aliens RPG forums will continue to operate another week before being dismantled entirely.

After weeks of promising that info would be forthcoming, Sega was quick to confirm the project’s demise. “At that point, Sega has no plans to move forward with the Aliens RPG,” a rep told GameSpot. “The Aliens franchise offers us so much composition to choose from that we feel it vital to take a step back and carefully consider the type of game we want to release. We plan to continue working with the Aliens franchise and ask fans to be patient and stay tuned for more info about what Sega has coming out for the Aliens series of games, starting with the upcoming Alien vs. Predator game.”

Sega will still publish Obsidian’s Bourne Identity-like espionage RPG Alpha Protocol, due out that fall on the PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3. The Irvine, California-based shop is additionally hard at work on Fallout: New Vegas, which will be published by Bethesda Softworks next year.

The video game film adaptation hasn’t precisely been the height of classic cinema, despite some mild box office success from films such as Resident Evil and Lara Croft Tomb Raider. However, that hasn’t stopped the Hollywood machine from trying to cash in on gamers favourite franchises.

Recent additions to the film remake pile include plans for a Bioshock movie, a film based on Prince of Persia, and fighting film Tekken. The last big game-based film releases was Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, which not only took an extremely heavy panning by critics, but plus failed miserably at the box office.

Now, THR is reporting that Columbia is developing a new film, based up Sony’s hit PS3 game Drake’s Fortune, with Kyle Ward set to pen the adaptation. Ward is no stranger to video game adaptations having already written the upcoming Kayne and Lynch, and has plus been lined up to write Hitman 2, but only has one major feature film to his name, the upcoming Michael-Bay produced Fiasco Heights, due out later that year. The film version of Drake’s Fortune will follow the story of the video game, which starred Nathan Drake–an adventurer and descendant of British naval hero Sir Francis Drake–in search of the fabled lost city of El Dorado.

When Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2’s debut trailer appeared earlier that year at GDC it left more than a few public scratching their heads. A PlayStation 3 redux of the Xbox 360’s well-received Ninja Gaiden II, the video gave many the impression that Sigma 2 may feature toned down violence, rather than hardcore gore the series is known for.

It appears that assumption is exact, according to Sigma 2’s producer, Yosuke Hayashi. Hayashi, who was in London today at an event for the game, told journalists “when we developed Ninja Gaiden 2 we very much placed the emphasis on the violence. Since last year the number of games featuring high levels of violence increased. So rather than do something the same as everyone else is doing we decided to construct it different.” Despite that, GameSpot UK can confirm Sigma 2 will still contain blood, limb dismemberment and decapitations, though the level of blood spatter is markedly less than in Ryu Hayabusa’s last Xbox 360 outing.

In addition to less gore the other major changes that instance around, according to Hayashi, is an improved camera system and adjustments to the level of difficulty–something else the series is known for. Hayashi additionally played down any plans to support Sigma 2 with DLC, saying “we are not going to support downloadable subject matter for the duration being.”

Today, Sony Computer Entertainment pulled the trigger on its teased announcement pertaining to Naughty Dog’s Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, announcing the story-heavy action adventure will indeed feature a competitive and cooperative multiplayer component. And, as rumored last week, PlayStation 3 gamers can enter the beta-testing phase for Uncharted 2’s online modes by picking up Sucker Punch’s inFamous on May 26.

Uncharted 2 charts new multiplayer ground.

Uncharted 2’s co-op element allows up to three players to run through a number of levels from the game’s single-player game together. Not all story mode levels will be available for co-op, with Naughty Dog telling GameSpot in a brand-new preview that the single-player stages on offer have been specifically chosen and slightly tweaked to accommodate multiple players as well as capitalize on both cover-based combat and platforming elements.

Thus far, Sony and Naughty Dog have offered looks at two competitive multiplayer mode varieties: deathmatch and Plunder. The first stays true to the traditional kill-or-be-killed variant, while the latter plays out in a fashion similar to capture the flag. As with co-op, competitive multiplayer will feature levels from the single-player game that have been altered and rebalanced.

As for the multiplayer beta program, gamers who purchase “one of the first copies” of inFamous when it launches for the PS3 on May 26 will receive an access key for the advanced look at Uncharted 2. The beta will start on June 3 and run through June 28.

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves is expected to reach for the PS3 that fall. For more info, check out GameSpot’s previous coverage of Uncharted 2.

One title that was still lost a publisher however, was the third person shooter, WET. Many retailers had begun listing Bethesda Softworks as the games manufacturer, though none could agree on a release period for the game.

Today, Bethesda has confirmed that it is picking up the title, and have it set for an autumn release, on both Xbox 360 and PS3. Wet is a heavily stylised third-person action game that takes the visual approach of directors like Quentin Tarantino and retro films, something that has been rather in vogue lately, and puts the player in the role of Rubi Malone, a mercenary out for revenge.

The game will not only feature a retro look, but plus retro sound, with all original 70’s and 70’s inspired music running all through the game. Rubi herself will be voiced by Eliza Dushku, of Dollhouse, Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Bring It On fame, who is no stranger to video game voice acting having worked on Yakuza and the recent Saints Row 2.

We follow Dante a few more steps into hell in our latest look at EA’s literary video game adaptation.

Although the Dante Alighieri of historical record was skilled with the quill and scroll, the Dante of EA’s upcoming literary-adaptation video game, Dante’s Inferno, prefers to get things done using the business end of a huge bone-and-metal scythe. That’s poor news for the minions of Hell as Dante plunges headlong into the underworld, searching for the love of his life, Beatrice, in a third-person action game that owes as much to the God of War series as it does to the classic poem on which it’s based. At EA’s recent spring press event, we had a chance to take Dante a bit deeper into the bowels of eternal punishment to see how the game is coming along.

Dante’s monstrous scythe is a formidable weapon…

The demo level on display picked up in a familiar spot, on board Charon–the living ship that ferries doomed souls across the river Styx. We saw Charon in our previous look at the game, and the encounters on board still play much the same. First up was a group of minor enemies that we took out with a few swipes of the scythe. They were followed by another group of minions and a couple of demonic-looking poor guys, as well as some flying enemies that were vaguely reminiscent of the Mutalisk in Starcraft. After that, it was the biggest baddie of them all, a huge, lumbering beast that climbed by the side of Charon to stand on deck. The beast was being piloted by a humanoid riding atop the demon’s neck and, to take him down, you first had to soften the demon up with some scythe strikes before climbing on top of it and engaging in a short quick-time event, a la God of War. Once you complete the quick-time sequence, Dante will defeat the demon’s rider and take control of the beast himself.

From there, the demo took us through more familiar territory. After Dante ripped the head off of the living ship Charon, it crashed into the side of a mountain, and he scaled the sheer cliff and ran into the hellish castle that housed King Minos, the mythological judge of the dead. It’s here that Dante once again ran into the infamous blade babies: tiny infants who, considering they were unbaptized during their brief lives, were sent to hell upon their death, only to be reborn as hideous monstrosities with blades for arms. Individually, the blade babies are easy to defeat, but once they surround you with sheer numbers, you’ll find that babies with swords for hands are a very big problem indeed.

With the blade babies dispatched, Dante continued his climb up the tower to his face-off with Minos. Once at the top, he was confronted by the menacing judge of the damned himself. In keeping with the gruesome tone of the surroundings, King Minos is a hideous beast: a huge, eyeless, serpentine creature with a faraway, forked tongue and a necklace made of humans corpses. The boss fight featured several stages, and the first part started with Minos trying to gouge Dante with his robust tail. Simply running around in circles was suitable for Dante to avoid those attacks and, soon adequate, Minos brought his huge face in close decent for Dante to do some wet work on Minos’ grill. Reeling in pain, the overlord thereupon reared back, exposing his guts, which we immediately attacked with Dante’s scythe.

After wearing Minos down abundant, you’ll move to another quick-time event that has Dante leaping and swinging around with his scythe. Perform it accurately, and you’ll finally take Minos down once and for all by grabbing his forked tongue and yanking his head toward and onto a huge, spiked wheel. With Minos’ head in place, Dante sets the spiked wheel in motion, essentially tearing the demon’s head apart in the process. At that point, it was game by for the demo.

The gameplay in Dante’s Inferno was similar to that found in our original look at the game, with moments of combat strewn within dungeon-crawling and even some light puzzle-solving. The combat animations are impressive in and of themselves, with Dante doing all sorts of fancy flips and tricks as he wields his deadly scythe. We’d like to see a bit more contextual animations on the enemy side as a conclusion of Dante’s amazing attacks. that is particularly the case with larger bosses, who barely seem to react as you’re slicing away. Considering that some of the development talent on Dante’s Inferno came straight from the team responsible for Dead Space (a game that reveled in its contextual enemy damage), here’s hoping some of that same philosophy carries by to that game.

…and he’ll need it when taking on the Limbo boss, King Minos.

Given that that the bloody King Minos fight occurs in Limbo, the first circle of hell, it stands to reason that things are bound to get a lot tougher and considerably more grim as Dante makes his way through the eight other circles. Having familiarized ourselves with Limbo, we’re hoping that our next look at Dante’s Inferno takes us deeper into the cavernous realms of the undead. The game is due for release in 2010 and we’ll be following through to its completion.
